Because the Buffalo Bills are definitely going to the Super Bowl this year, we will be focusing on Super Bowl commercials and the strategies these companies use to persuade the audience into buying their products.

Please watch this video of some of the most popular Super Bowl commercials. Then, comment your favorite commercial from the list and why. Also, comment a reason you think that commercial was effective and if you would buy the product.

2. Rhetorical Triangle - advertising

First, we must learn the different rhetorical devices and how they fit into arguments and commercials. A rhetorical triangle is used to help students visualize how these pieces work together. Ethos: how the speaker comes across. Is he reputable? Do you trust the company? Pathos: how the argument affects the audience's emotions. Are you gaining sympathy? Satisfaction? Logos: how the argument uses facts and statistics to convince the audience. Is it statistically better? Kairos/Exigence: what is going on that prompted this argument. Commercials are basically arguments to the viewers to buy the product. We will be beginning to write rhetorical analysis essays where we analyze how the author argues and presents ideas using different rhetorical techniques. You evaluate how effectively someone conveys a point to the audience. Watch this video and leave any questions or concerns you have for learning to write a rhetorical analysis.
